Melodea, Ltd., a pioneer in sustainable barrier coatings, is stepping up to the plate with MelOx NGen™, its latest offering. This innovative solution is a high-performance barrier product specifically engineered for the recyclability of plastic food packaging, thereby reducing plastic waste and maintaining food freshness.
MelOx NGen™, a plant-sourced, water-based coating, lines the interior of a wide range of plastic food packaging such as pouches, films, bags, lidding, and blister packs. It is especially beneficial for the packaging of consumer packaged goods (CPGs), meats, confectionery, nutrition bars, snacks, and dairy products. The coating also extends to pharmaceuticals, further illustrating its versatility.
MelOx NGen™ has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) for food contact. This novel coating, being rolled out to the global plastic industry, significantly improves food shelf-life and aids in the conservation of resources.
The coating is a derivation of Melodea’s MelOx, an award-winning, bio-based, and renewable material for paper packaging. The new product is meant specifically for use on plastic, offering a cost-effective and sustainable substitute to Ethyl Vinyl Alcohol copolymers (EVOH) and met-PET plastic materials. It also extends the range of recyclable plastic food packaging, aiding companies in achieving their sustainability goals and complying with government regulations against single-use plastics.
Evidently, MelOx NGen™ is set to play a critical role in the global effort to reduce plastic consumption and waste, in line with the European Union’s Plastic Waste Directive. By enhancing the incorporation of plastic packaging into the circular economy, Melodea is poised to contribute significantly to global sustainability efforts. The industry eagerly awaits the results of the Sustainability Awards 2023, where MelOx NGen™ is a finalist in the sustainability in packaging category.
