For a 40-year-old man from Buldhana, Maharashtra, the world took a 180-degree turn when he was diagnosed with Amyloidosis, an unusual condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of proteins in the body, causing his heart to fail. His story of survival, resilience, and Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai’s unwavering commitment to providing world-class healthcare unfolds as they successfully perform their eighth heart transplant.
Upon arriving at Apollo Hospitals, the patient presented with severe chest pain, breathlessness, and fatigue. It was clear he was in irreversible heart failure due to Amyloidosis, where the proteins had aggregated in his heart, disrupting its functioning and leading to heart failure. The only option for his survival was a heart transplant.
The life-changing moment came on April 4th, 2023. The hospital received news of a brain-dead individual in South Mumbai. In a record 46 minutes, thanks to the commendable assistance of the traffic control police, Mumbai & Navi Mumbai, the donor heart was transported to Apollo. The successful heart transplant surgery was carried out with no complications.
“The patient’s resilience and the unwavering support from his family helped him manage the disease for two years while waiting for a heart donor. This case is an example of the power of medical science and the importance of organ donation,” remarked Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav, Consultant, CVTS, Heart & Lung Transplant Surgery at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai. Today, the patient is making remarkable progress in the heart transplant ICU, embarking on his new journey of life.
